Moving from the topic of race and segregation, this country of ours, is known to have some failures elsewhere as well. The problem I am addressing is economically. This country faced what is known as the Great Depression. It inspired civilians to feel just as the name implicates. With financial crisis on the rise, as well as the recovery from World War I, we needed a leader who knew what he was doing. President Herbert Hoover was not the guy. If anything, he not only initiated the Great Depression, bu his solution was to do absolutely nothing. Luckily, “the new deal was forced to turn to marginal intellectuals for the guidance and council it required”.
The Great Depression brought about a time of death and rebirth, in a sense ,for our country. During the Depression, our president believed the economic depression could not be cured by legislative action or executive pronouncement. How insane is that? As president of the United States, it was his given duty to use his authority to utilize the government. What are these branches there for if not to protect us? He should have used the legislative branch to allow himself to pass laws that would better our nation. He should have used the executive powers to exercise his authority and make sure things were going according to plan, but he was unable to organize such a thing. He was very much in the wrong.
Things were able to work themselves out with the helping hand of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He came along with a new deal that would bring about relief, recovery and reform. Unlike Hoover, Roosevelt utilized the legislative and executive branch’s authority. He put laws into place to bring about a change. He closed down the banks to conduct formal investigations, and reassured the people through the radio that he would solve our crisis. He created new government agencies, as well as passed a second new deal that expanded the role of the federal government, saving the economy from getting much worse. Seems like more thought should go into electing our president besides how it will effect our pocket. It is extremely important to hear their ideas on how they plan to use the government to bring about a change for the.greater good.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt was president for four terms, the only president in history to be elected for four terms showing how a good president can inspire people to go out and vote. FDR success as a good president is how he reduced the rate of unemployment and his New Deal Program of Relief, Recovery, and Reform helped millions of Americans to survive the Great Depression. Another example was Good Neighbor Policy to counteract the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, allowing the removal U.S. forces from Latin American countries like Haiti, Cuba, and Panama. FDR was a good president because he genuinely cared about the people.
